Troubleshooting Genline FamilyFinder

I receive the error message: “No internet connection found or Genlines server is down.”
When I start GFF nothing happens.
I can start the program but the list that should contain counties is empty.

Problem:

You have a firewall that is blocking GFF.

Solution:

You have to allow the following two programs access to the internet:

GFFinder.exe to www.genline.se port 80.

AutoUpdate.exe till www.genline.se port 80.

Engine.exe till port www.genline.se 80.

Engine.exe to gserver3.genline.se port 443. This file is downloaded the first time GFFinder.exe is run. Note that some firewalls change the name 'engine.exe' to 'GFF Runtime'.

If you are an IPAR customer you also have to allow access for engine.exe to ipar.genline.se port 443.

Below is a short description on how to allow GFF access with Norton Personal Firewall.

To configure "Norton Internet Security":

  • Open Norton Internet Security
  • Select "Status & Configurations" under Norton Internet Security
  • Click on "personal firewall" and then on "configure"
  • In the new window select the tab "programs".
  • Search the program list for "GFFinder".
  • If you can't find GFFinder.exe or AutoUpdate.exe in the list click on "program scan" to search your computer for all programs.
  • Click on the arrow below "Internet Access" and select "allow all" in the little popup window.
  • Follow the same steps for engine.exe or GFF Runtime.
  • If you can't find engine.exe or GFF Runtime in the list you have to start Genline FamilyFinder once to download engine.exe.
  • Close the window by clicking OK.

Problem:

Your access to the Internet is through a proxy server.

Solution:

The traffic from GFFinder.exe goes to www.genline.se through port 80 and uses simple HTTP GET commands.

The traffic from engine.exe goes to gserver3.genline.se and ipar.genline.se through port 443 and is SSL-encrypted.

You can run GFF.1 trough a Proxy server. Open the file proxy.conf and type in the following:

proxy=Address or IP to your HTTPS Proxy server

port=Port number to your HTTPS Proxy server

httpproxy=Address or IP to your HTTP Proxy server

httpport=Port number to your HTTP Proxy server

To run engine.exe through a HTTPS Proxy server you have to have version GFF2.1 or later.

Problem:

Is your modem running and connected to the Internet?. Your browser may be configured to automatically dial up a connection when you start it. Our older version, GFFinderPlugin, functioned as a web browser plugin so staring your web browser likely automatically connected to the Internet. When using GFF it is important to remember that you need to be connected to the Internet for the program to work.

Solution:

To check to see if you are connected to the Internet simply go to www.genline.com or your favorite web site to check that you can surf okay. If surfing is not a problem then you are connected to the Internet.

I receive the error message "Invalid SSL Certificate (GEND/IPAR)!

Problem:

Your computer time is not set correctly.

Solution:

Set your computer time to the correct time.

I receive an error message saying that libeay32.dll, ssleay32.dll, or lwf215p.dll are corrupt or missing.

Problem:

The automatic update did not function correctly.

Solution:

Delete the file latest_version.txt which is located in the folder c:\program files\genline\GFFinder2\ and GFF will download all the files again the next time you run the program.

GFF is not printing properly.

Problem:

Some GFF/OS/printer combinations do not print properly which Genline is aware of and currently investigating a solution for these inconsistencies.

If you are having any printing problems please forward your OS and printer information to Genline at usinfo@genline.com.

If you have any further questions or comments regarding GFF contact Genline at usinfo@genline.com.
