System Requirements

Installation Guide

1. Make sure that Java is updated (Important!), by clicking on the Apple | Software update... . Select all items containing the text Java and click Install.

2. Click on the link to download GFF Mac 2.4.2 Java
A zip file will then be downloaded. It will be unpacked automatically and a folder, normally called GFFMac, will land on the Desktop or in the folder for downloaded files. If you use some special download tool (also Mac OS X version is affecting) the name may differ a bit. (E.g. GFFMac.folder). In that case the name must be changed to GFFMac.

3. Thus, make sure that a folder with the exact name GFFMac is unpacked from the zip file, automatically or via tool, and is placed on the Desktop.

4. Open a Finder window and open Applications. (In Mac OS X 10.2.8 you find "Applications" in Finder's menu under "Go").

5. Drag-and-drop the folder GFFMac into the Applications folder. In Mac OS X 10.3 and later you may, instead, drop it right on the icon for Applications. In this case, be careful to really hit the icon and not over or below it.

GFFMac will then be visible among the other applications.

Please check now that the path to startGFF.command is exactly:
Applications | GFFMac | startGFF.command

6. Installation is ready!

7. Run the application via Finder by opening:
Applications -> GFFMac -> startGFF.command Before the actual program start, a Terminal window will open.

Don't close it, until you're ready with GFFMac.

8. The program begins with a dialog window, where the language can be changed to English. This is also the place, where you enter your user name and password. If you don't have a user name, just click "Test the product" for a demo.

9. Click on "Log in". Wait a few seconds and the programs main window will be shown. Follow the instructions in the upper, left corner.

10. You can get some help reading the User Guide for Genline FamilyFinder's PC version:

Genline FamilyFinder User Guide

Good luck with your family search!

Problems and Solutions

1. If the program won't start, or if it behaves strange after the start, the cause is often one of the following:

- The folder GFFMac has got another name, or has been placed in a faulty folder. See point 2 to 5 above.

- Java is not updated. See point 1 above.

- You have started from the jar file, which gives wrong memory parameters. See point 7 above.

2. Start the GFF Java from the Desktop.

- Open a Finder window.

- Open the Application folder and then the GFFMac folder.

- Select the file startGFF.command by clicking it once with the left mouse button.

- Click with the right mouse button or go to the menu Archive and choose ”Create alias”.

- Drag and drop the newly created alias file on to the Desktop.

- Start the program by double click on the file on the Dekstop.
