Swedish Church Records
What is the Swedish Church Records archive?
Genline's Swedish Church Records archive consists of photographic quality images scanned from microfilm of the original church records. These microfilms are direct copies of the masters kept at the Swedish National Archives in Stockholm.
What Swedish Church Records are included in our archive?
Our church records archive includes records from the 16th-20th century. These records consist of birth/baptismal, confirmation, marriage, death/burial, church ledgers and household examination rolls. These are the main sources of genealogical information in Sweden. In some cases we will be complementing these church records with those kept by a government agency known as Statistics Sweden (abbreviated as SCB).
Genline is currently publishing SCB birth, marriage, and death records from 1897 to 1937. Check the Preliminary Production Plan for information regarding what church records are currently being published and future plans for the publishing of additional church records.
What is GIDx?
GIDx is a concept for Genline which is the "indexing" of the Swedish Church Records archive down to the "Genline ID number" (GID) or image. The purpose of the GIDx is to provide searchable complementary information such as person, parish, village, or farm name that is related to a particular GID number or image.
Genline FamilyFinder supports searching GIDx content by allowing the user to Search Person and Search Place in the Swedish Church Records archive.
The first GIDx content that was published in the Swedish Church Records archive is from the SCB material (Swedish Church Records between 1860 and 1897). Gradually the farms and villages in the household examination books are being added to the archive. Places lists the parishes where the farms and villages have been indexed.
The release of Genline Familyfinder 3.0 introduced the possibility for Genline’s users to contribute transcribed information about people. Transcribed person content will become more and more available relative to the amount of transcriptions contibuted by Genline’s users.
Why are some volumes in the Swedish Church Records archives missing?
We are aware that there are still some missing volumes in the Swedish Church Records archives. In some cases the film lists that we have purchased from the Swedish National Archives have not been accurate and Genline is trying to locate the missing material.
Parallel to this, our production staff has started to check the volumes in the Swedish Church Records archive to verify that they have been published correctly.
